The Shepherd School of Music

Hou is Artist Teacher of Orchestras and Ensembles at the Shepherd School where he conducts the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, works with the opera department, coaches chamber music, and directs the Contemporary Music Ensemble.

Grand Teton Music Festival

Resident Conductor of the Grand Teton Music Festival, Jerry assists Maestro Donald Runnicles in conducting the renowned orchestra. He has led concerts including performances Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with soprano Jessica Rivera, Rhapsody in Blue with Kirill Gerstein, and Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 1 with Daniil Trifonov.

Hou led performances with Ensemble Signal in acclaimed performances of Reich Richter commissioned for the opening of the Shed. Conceived by composers Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt with painter Gerard Richter, the works explored the shared sensory language of visual art and music.


Der Kaiser von Atlantis

Produced by The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Music by Viktor Ullmann, libretto by Peter Kien. This production was created in September 2020, with the late Miah Im, director Pat Diamond, and students from the shepherd School of Music.


Concert in Rice Stadium

Hou conducts the Rice Brass Department in Rice Stadium, Sunday, March 21, 2021.

Waves was written for the Rice Stadium by Nicky Sohn in the winter of 2020. The initial idea of the work came from the spacial distribution of the ensemble. The work explores different shapes and configurations that form wave-like sounds.


Dallas Symphony Brass

Hou led the Dallas Symphony Brass in June of 2020, a concert of patriotic favorites. This concert, dedicated to Principal Trumpet Emeritus Ryan Anthony (1969-2020), was the first public performance with audience after the start of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Music in Darkness

Georg Friedrich Haas’ in vain

Hou led the Texas premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas’s in vain at the Rothko Chapel, Houston, Texas. Performed in moments of partial and complete darkness.

Musiqa Houston

Hou makes frequent appearances conducting the Musiqa Ensemble in Houston. Performances have included the premieres of Ulysses Returns and Maternity by Tony Brandt, and Cinderella by Karim Al-Zand.

Sisyphus Rising

Hou led this multimedia performance art project at the Deborah Colton Gallery. A collaboration between Angelbert Metoyer and Saul Williams, Sisyphus Rising featured Metoyer creating art live as Williams orated poetry, alongside the musical improvisation led by Hou.
